Florence in the Winter: Your Guide for a Perfect Holiday!
Florence was the most unexpectedly amazing city in Italy that I have visit. Yep, I said it. And I even can say this after visiting Florence in the winter of all times!
While some of you might be thinking… how did you not know Florence was that amazing!? Wellll, hear me out. I booked a trip to Italy with very little planning in advance. It was at the very top of my bucket list for so many reasons: the wine, the food, the culture, my very own heritage (I am an Italiano! (Italian hands emoji)) that I knew that when I had enough time off I had to get there as soon as I could.
Thankfully, during my trip to Rome, my sister and I planned to spend a few days in Florence. We were mostly going to visit Tuscany, but absolutely fell in love with the quaint cuteness of a city Florence is!
Florence has a special kind of allure during the winter months. Not only is the city less busy compared to the summer months, but there is something much more intimate and cozy that makes the city feel as though it was meant to thrive in winter.
Maybe its the way the Christmas markets feel right at home in the narrow alleyways throughout Florence. Or maybe its the way the backdrop of the Duomo is the perfect setting for a beautiful Christmas tree. Or maybe sunset at Piazza del Michelangelo is the perfect cozy view to enjoy while sipping hot cocoa. Call me crazy, but this seems like a perfect holiday to me!

When is Winter in Florence?
Florence, Italy is in the northern hemisphere, so the winter season in Florence typically spans from December to February. While the coldest months of the year for Florence, this season offers a unique and enchanting atmosphere that differs from the bustling crowds of the warmer months.
Florence Winter Weather
The winter weather in Florence is mild, with daytime temperatures averaging around 10-15 °C (50-59 °F).
While the days may be cool, the evenings can get quite chilly, so packing layers is essential. I recommend wearing a winter coat or parka over your outfit, so you can be warm enough while outside, but have a layer to shed while indoors!
Getting around Florence in the Winter Months
Navigating Florence in winter is a breeze. The city is compact and walkable, allowing you to explore its charming streets at your own pace. You will easily be able to walk from destination to destination as long as you are wearing comfortable shoes!
There are also many transportation options other than walking that will fit into your budget. Public transportation is readily available by the many bus routes available. There is also a plethora of taxis and “Uber” that can take you from place to place as well.
Things to do in Florence in the Winter
Now onto the good stuff. There are so many things to do in Florence in the winter that are even more special during the holiday time and when it is cold out! Just be sure to check in advance if certain attractions are open on holiday days (i.e. on Christmas Day) because there would be nothing more disappointing than a closed exhibit on a special day (and trust me, I’ve been there!)
Here are the best things to do while visiting Florence in the winter. And don’t worry, I have included a good mix of indoor and outdoor activities!
1. Visit a Museum
Winter is the perfect time to immerse yourself in Florence’s rich cultural heritage by visiting its world-renowned museums.
Two of the best museums in Florence to visit (regardless of the seasons) are the Uffizi Gallery and the Accademia Gallery. Both of these museums offer an intimate experience with some of the most famous art in the world! The Birth of Venus is one of the most famous paintings in this museum, and is incredible to see in person! Without the long lines of the summer months, you will be able to appreciate the masterpieces at your leisure.
If you want to be prepared in advance, you can purchase a skip-the-line ticket online to ensure a quick entry into the Uffizi Gallery!
2. Take a Walking Tour of the City
With fewer tourists, winter is an ideal time to explore Florence on foot. A walking tour reveals the city’s hidden gems and allows you to appreciate Florence’s unique and gorgeous architecture without the summer crowds. Just be sure to dress warmly for a walking tour and wear comfortable shoes!
3. Shop at the Christmas Markets
If visiting Florence in the winter, specifically during December, a trip to the Christmas markets is a must. Florence’s Christmas markets add a festive touch to the city and are absolutely adorable!
The Piazza Santa Croce Christmas Market is the largest in the city and takes place from November 28th-December 20th and is the one I would recommend visiting. Stroll through the stalls filled with handmade crafts, local delicacies, and unique gifts while sipping a hot cocoa!
This is a must-do for any Florence itinerary in winter, as it will allow you to see the city from a different light while also allowing you to connect with the locals.
4. Walk Across the Ponte Vecchio
It is almost impossible for someone to visit Florence without visiting the Ponte Vecchio. Well, almost. I think if someone didn’t visit the Duomo I would argue they haven’t even seen Florence, but the Ponte Vecchio would be a close second for the most well-known attractions in Florence!
The Ponte Vecchio is one of the most popular things to do in Florence, and for good reason! The famous bridge was built in 1345 and the entire promenade offers breathtaking views of the Arno River.
The bridge connects Piazza del Duomo and Piazza della Signoria and allows you to capture the city’s beauty from a different perspective. The bridge is only 500 meters from the Duomo, so it is very easy to see both on the same day while you are on your Florence winter trip!
5. Watch the Sunset from Piazzale Michelangelo
Sunset at Piazzele Michelangelo is another one of the must-dos while in Florence during any season, but it is especially beautiful during the winter! Piazzale Michelangelo is one of the most famous viewpoints of the city, offering panoramic views of the Duomo set behind the Arno river.
On a summer evening, you can often find locals and tourists sharing a bottle of wine while they watch the sunset! During the winter, people often have hot drinks such as hot cocoa and tea to keep their hands warm while enjoying the view.
6. Climb the Campanile di Giotto
The Campanile di Giotto is another viewpoint of the city, but from a different angle. The Campanile di Giotto, also known as Giotto’s Bell Tower, is one of the tallest buildings in Florence and it provides a bird’s-eye view of the city.
The bell tower is a quintessential example of the gothic architecture that exists throughout Florence, and is one of the 4 pillar monuments that every tourist must see.
In winter, the shorter lines make this climb (414 stairs to be exact) more accessible, allowing you to enjoy a breathtaking vista of the city and its surroundings without the huge crowds. Plus, if you are visiting on a cold day, it’s a great way to block some of the wind for a few minutes!
7. Attend the Green Line Festival
Winter in Florence brings the city to life with the Green Line Festival (formerly known as the Florence Light Festival).
Marvel at the artistic light installations that illuminate the streets and historic buildings, creating a magical ambiance. Exact dates differ year-to-year, but expect to catch the lights during the month of December.
8. Explore the Boboli Gardens
While the Boboli Gardens are a delight in any season, winter offers a tranquil escape from the crowds. Although you may not see the vibrant blooms and plants that one may expect in the spring and summer months, it’s still an enjoyable visit.
You can wander through the meticulously landscaped gardens while checking out the sculptures and architecture of this historical oasis.
9. Check out the Christmas Tree in Piazza Duomo
Piazza Duomo, adorned with festive decorations, hosts a magnificent Christmas tree. This central square becomes a hub of holiday cheer, providing a cozy backdrop for your winter visit. It’s lit annually on December 8th.
10. Go Ice Skating at Firenze Winter Park
For a dose of winter fun, lace up your skates and glide across the ice at Firenze Winter Park. This temporary ice rink adds a touch of winter sports to your Italian holiday.
11. Have Lunch at the Central Market
After ice skating (or any of the outdoor activities) warm up with a hearty Tuscan meal at the Central Market. Indulge in local flavors and savor the winter warmth in this bustling food haven.
12. Take a Wine Tour
Last, but certainly not least (if you know me…) , is a day trip to the nearby wineries. Although winter isn’t peak vineyard season, the wineries are still worth a visit! Take a wine tour to experience the region’s exceptional wines, accompanied by cozy tastings in atmospheric cellars.
Some of the closest wineries include Villa Le Piazzole, Podere Ema, and Poggio La Noce. All three of these wineries are within a 15 minute drive from the city’s center!
However, it is important to check with the wineries ahead of time, as many do close during the winter months.
